October 18: Thirsty Again and Again

GOD’S REMINDER: “Everyone who drinks this water will get thirsty again and again. Anyone who drinks the water I give will never thirst—not ever.” John 4:13-14

NOTE TO SELF: I had an epiphany regarding my anger issues during my time with God on Monday after reading Colossians 3:5. Soon after chewing on that scripture, I began my daily reading in my Message Remix bible and John 4:13-14 jumped out at me: “…thirsty again and again,” Jesus said. He was talking about our earthly ways.

If we continue to keep walking in our own dry desires, we will end up only thirsting for more, never becoming fully satisfied. We’ll keep finding new ways to quench our thirst, but we’ll always end up with a dry mouth. And like my anger, if I keep drinking it, I will never find peace.

During the stretch of time that God was calling me fifteen years ago, I tried very hard to drown Him out. Most people do. I made excuses. I did research to prove God didn’t exist. I drank more heavily. I lost myself in one destructive sexual relationship after another. Basically, I looked everywhere to find any half-hearted truth except from the Source of all Truth.

The woman at the well was also seeking Truth. She was eagerly anticipating the coming of the Messiah, but in the interim, sought hope in hopeless things that left her lifeless. When Jesus offered her living water, she forgot to fill her own jug—even left it at the well—and instead, joyously went and told everyone she knew whom she had met. She was forever changed, as were many other Samaritans during Jesus’ two-day layover in Samaria.

Our sin is the water we keep gulping down in hopes of quenching an eternal aching within. The only way we’ll ever be fully satisfied is by immersing ourselves in Living Water given by Christ Jesus.
