NOTE TO SELF: As any parent knows, our children will do anything to get our attention, even if it’s negative attention. What they seem to like to do most is yell and make a scene, particularly when in public. It’s this whole idea of, “Look at me! I’m here! I want to be noticed!!” Even as adults, we still tend to do stupid things so people will pay attention to us.
The other day I did just this. My son was throwing a tantrum in my face, so instead of ignoring it or walking away, I just started throwing my own tantrum right back in his face. Boy, was that stupid!
God is The Creator of all things. He is Ruler over everything. He doesn’t need to do anything else to prove He exists. (Wasn’t that enough?) When we act like a fool, God doesn’t yell and make a scene to get our attention in order to scold us or punish us. God rules with a soft whisper. And He will make it personal and intimate.
“…and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper” (1 Kings 1:11b-12).
PRAYER: Thank You, Father, that You won’t yell or make a scene to get our attention, but instead, we can see You everywhere we go and in everything we do. We are blessed that You rule with a soft and gentle whisper instead of wrath and anger. May we always listen to Your low whisper when we are acting foolish in hopes of grabbing Your attention, because we don’t need to, we always have it. Amen.
JOURNAL: Write about a time that you recently did something really stupid, or out of the ordinary, in order to get someone’s attention. What kind of attention did you gain from doing it? What do you do in hopes to get God’s attention?
