NOTE TO SELF: Are you ready? Because at a drop of a hat, God may call on YOU to speak up and explain to someone why you believe the things you believe. The world sees us as circus freaks: The Abstinent Teen, The Devout Husband, The Stay at Home Wife, The Content Couple, The Praying Person, The Funny Sober Guy. To the world, those things are not the norm, and like circus freaks, people are curious about us and how we live. We can’t be caught off guard when someone asks, “Why won’t you cheat on your husband with that guy who is obviously hitting on you?” Or, “Don’t you feel worthless staying at home all day long with your kids?”
What the world doesn’t consciously realize (although I believe many people do, but refuse to admit it) is that they desire what we have! God has called us to be set apart from the world and its ways. While the wild world of real circus freaks roams around unnoticed, we are given the gift to be noticed for what we are not. We must be ready to answer the question, but always with the utmost courtesy instead of defensiveness. Our prayer should be that we will lead them to Christ by example.
PRAYER: Father, help me to stand out. Reveal Your goodness in me to others so they may ask, “What is it about you?” When I speak, Lord, help me to discern Your Words from my own. Guide me in kindness and love. I pray if I ever speak through a tone and attitude of defensiveness, that first and foremost, God, You will forgive my ego, while also fixing the damage I may have caused. Set me apart, O God! Amen.
JOURNAL: What kind of “circus freak” are you to the world? What would your title be? Write down your response for that moment you may be asked, “Why are you like the way you are?” Then reread it out loud. Practice your answer. Be ready!
