This is a Test

(Repost from exactly ONE year ago today on my old site, tristinedenise.blog.com)

REMINDER FROM GOD: In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace.

{ John 16:33 }

NOTE TO SELF: Don’t you hate when that noisy EBS warning buzzer startles you during one of your favorite TV shows?

BZZZZZ! “This is a test. For the next sixty seconds, this station will conduct a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test.” Bzzzzzzz. Bzzz. Bzzz. “If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been instructed to tune to one of the broadcast stations in your area.”

Wouldn’t it be great if God sent us those messages? BZZZZZ! BZZZZ!!“Tristine. This is a test. For the next three months I will be conducting a test of the Godly Lifestyle Awareness System. This is only a test.”

Wouldn’t that make it all better if we just knew in advance when “this is a test”?

I also love those new orange juice commercials where the mother, father, or child sits at the table and finds out in advance of all the things that will go wrong throughout the day, and then it finishes off with, “I’m glad I had my orange juice.”

I have to tell you, life would be so much easier if we knew ahead of time what would happen so we could prepare ourselves for it. The EBS message and signal allows us to get prepared. And if it were an actual emergency, we would be “instructed” on what to do. Wouldn’t that be great if we had something like that in our everyday life?

Good news: We do!

Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)

Phew. Thanks, God for the heads up! But how many of us—ME!—aren’t listening? How many of us hear the Bzzzz of the warning and automatically assume, “THIS IS AN EMERGENCY!” and go into panic mode? (I’m raising my hand.)

This GLAS (Godly Lifestyle Awareness System) message isn’t just for you. This is so for me! Because I get all caught up in the test and seem to forget that just because I’m a Christian, doesn’t mean life will be sunshine and roses, lollipops and puppy dogs everyday. I don’t know why I think that. I don’t know what led me to believe that. But we all do it. And then some of us end up blaming GOD for it. But He clearly said it: YOU. Will. Have. Trouble. YOU!

HEY YOU! You will have trouble. Get on with it and take heart, because guess what? Jesus overcame the world!! That means it doesn’t matter!! That means the trouble you have here, doesn’t matter in the end. Jesus already overcame it all for you. When you hear that the bible is The Good News, this is it. This is what “they” are talking about.

Does it make it easier when trouble does come? Yes! (You were expecting a “no” here, weren’t you?) The bible says it’s going to happen, so stop acting so surprised when it does. Stop getting mad, and stop getting mad at God (note to self!). Instead: buck up, smile, “take heart”, and overcome it with Jesus.

MY PRAYER: Lord, teach me to be an overcomer in You. Help me to smile through the tough times and pass these tests. Calm my mind and spirit when the enemy sounds the alarming siren in my world. Help me to turn to Your instructions not only in an actually emergency, but also throughout the test. Amen.
