Stand Up SATurday: Purpose

God colors

This week we considered what it means to be a “light to the nations” and making God’s salvation global. When we find ourselves asking that nagging age old question, “What’s my purpose in life?” God gave us a clear answer, and today it’s time to Stand Up and be that light, “bringing out the God colors of the world.”

REMINDER FROM GOD: Be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with Me. I am not a secret to be kept.

You’re kingdom subjects. Now live like it. Live out your God-created identity. Live generously and graciously with others, the way I live towards you. This is a large work I’ve called you into, but don’t be overwhelmed by it. It’s best to start small. Give a cool cup of water to someone who is thirsty, for instance. The smallest act of giving or receiving makes you a true apprentice. You won’t lose a thing. We are intimately linked in this harvest work.

Your eyes are windows into your body. If you open your eyes wide in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light.

{Matthew 5:14, 16, 48, 10:40-42, 6:22}

NOTE TO SELF: Now is our opportunity to start shining our bright lights everywhere we go. From the small stuff to the big stuff, we must shine!

As many of you know, aside from blogging for Gospel for Asia, I also blog for Compassion International and I was recently informed that there are many children who have been waiting over six months to be sponsored (<--click that sentence to see these children). Some of these children are living in AIDS-affected areas and are in dire need of health care and life-skills training.

The parents of these children take them to their local church to register them in hopes that they will receive the help they need. Although at first they are excited about the prospect of being sponsored, unfortunately, many children begin to lose hope when no one sponsors them.

Imagine that feeling of knowing you may have an opportunity to go to school, receive medical attention and nutritional food...but the help never comes. Imagine the disappointment these children must be feeling. Imagine their prayers each night as they go to sleep, hoping that tomorrow will be the day someone recognizes them and offers to help them. Imagine their faith that it will happen and it feels like God’s not answering.

Haven’t we all waited (what sometimes feels like an eternity) for God to answer our prayers in times of need? Haven’t we all prayed that God would send the right person into our lives to meet our needs? Our faith is strong in the beginning, but after weeks, or even mere days, our faith waivers. What happens when months go by and we still see no answer?

God calls us to be generous with our lives, with our resources, and then follows it up with comforting words, “You won’t lose a thing. WE are intimately linked together in this.”

These problems of the world are not God’s alone. They are yours and mine. We must own up to what is happening outside of the comforts of our own homes and take some sort of action. Not because I hope you will, but because God says it’s our purpose in the Kingdom business.

Don’t feel bad if you can’t afford to sponsor a child from Compassion International or Gospel for Asia. While I do blog for them in hopes that my readers will act and help, I also understand that there are many people out there who are in dire need themselves and can’t make those kinds of sacrifices at this time. Yesterday's guest blogger, Marie Wikle, runs an organization called, Spreading JOY, and offers many ways you can let your light shine without having to spend a dime.

Remember, if you are new to “letting your light shine,” God says it’s okay to start small. Do what you are able to do. Let God use you in other ways, but always be open to what the Holy Spirit is nudging you to do.

OUR PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help us to be the light of the world and shine Your goodness everywhere we go. Give us insight into our talents and show us how we can use them for Your glory. Teach us to listen to Your promptings and to always be faithful to follow through. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

{What will you stand up for today? How has this week’s topic influenced your life? Please feel free to share your thoughts.}
