Bondage Mentality

"God listened to their groaning...God understood." Exodus 2:25, 25

MY PRAYER: God, why does it seem as if You don’t answer prayers in our time of need? I believe things are about to change for me and my family, but I often feel as if I have to wander through the wilderness for years before you answer my prayer. Why do I find myself so often wandering for years in the wilderness even when I continue to seek You?
REMINDER FROM GOD:  The Israelites thought they were better off as slaves in Egypt, believing they would die in the wilderness. (They couldn’t even hear Me—they were that beaten down in spirit by the harsh slave conditions.) I heard their groaning and I understood. I selected them and brought them out of Egypt to make them My special people, as you are today, also. In your distress, when you turn to Me, I will not let you down, for I Am merciful and I can’t forget my covenant I made to you. I will bring you out from under the yoke of the bondage. Therefore, keep My covenant so that you may be successful in everything you do. I will do better for you than I did for your ancestors. I will make the labor of your hands abundantly successful. For I will rejoice over you and make you prosperous. I will create in you a new heart, and renew a steadfast spirit within you.
{See Exodus 14:12, 6:9, Deuteronomy 4:20, Exodus 2:24, 25, Deuteronomy 4:30-31; Exodus 6:7; Deuteronomy 29:9-14; Genesis 9:9; Deuteronomy 30:5-6, 9; Psalm 51:10}
NOTE TO SELF: I’ve often wondered why God had to set so many rules and guidelines for the Israelites while they were in the wilderness. For 436 years, the Israelites lived in a foreign land, under foreign rules, and under foreign gods. Changing their mindset wouldn’t happen overnight, even if God did part the Red Sea! God had to change their negative thoughts from a bondage mentality into a Godly mentality. He used all those years to teach them His ways and set them free from the mindset of hopelessness and despair. God could not use them or make them successful with that old way of thinking—much like God can’t do new things in me if I remain thinking bondage thoughts.
Sometimes I have to wander for years in my own wilderness. It is there where God can break me of the yoke of bondage that beat me down for years, to the point where I knew nothing else aside from abuse and negativity, poverty and hopelessness. For years I believed that I would never find love, that I would never find a good man who would treat me right. God kept me wandering around, and little by little, taught me to break out of that mentality by showing me my worth. When I fully understood that I deserved better (got out of that bondage mentality), God took me out of that wilderness and placed me in the Promised Land.
While I’m in the wilderness God loves me, places His Word and promises deep within my heart, and renews my Spirit so that the labor of my hands will be successful.
{It is in the wilderness where we receive a new heart and our spirit is renewed and made stronger. How long have you been wandering around the wilderness in a bondage mentality? What do you think God is trying to free you from that you are resisting? What can you do to start moving out of wilderness?}
What I’m speaking about today is no coincidence. I wrote this blog early yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, and also spoke about it the night before with my family. Last night I stayed up to watch Joel Osteen on ABC Family, which airs at 11:30 PM Central Time. God is confirming that not only does He want ME to know this, but He wants YOU to get it deep into your spirit, too!

  2. I loved your statement: Sometimes I have to wander for years in my own wilderness. The nation of Israel wondered forty years, sometimes out of their own stubbornness, Jesus spent time in the wilderness to pray, it is in the wilderness that we can also find that perfect quiet place where God can speak to our hearts! I am so glad I was on twitter this morning and found you!

  3. I'm so glad you found me, too, Patricia! My husband and I often criticize the Israelites only to discover we're no better! That's probably why they are such a good example for us of what NOT to be! :)
