Virtual Helping Hand

Scripture to reflect upon for Manic Monday: Psalm 88:3
“For my soul is full of trouble and my life draws near the grave.”

In case you haven’t noticed, the world is aching.

If you haven’t noticed, you’re not looking, or you’re self-absorbed in your own achiness. We can get lost in it. We can become so self-bound that we can’t see that others, all around us, are in pain, too.

There is much suffering in the world, and let’s for one minute forget world hunger and homelessness. Instead, let’s look in our own back yard.

I am on Facebook about 1-2 hours a day, on and off. Throughout the day there are so many people posting “status reports” of their self-diagnosis of pain and suffering. “I hate my life,” was a perfect example of one I saw today. I can’t ignore it. Can you?

Even if these people aren’t everyday “friends,” so to speak, I have befriended them in some way and I’m absolutely obligated as that friend to help. I’m listening to the heartbreaks of society through social media.

When I saw the “hates life” status, I thought of at least one good reason why she didn’t need to hate life: her precious, beautiful one-year old daughter. Even though that “comment” may not seem like a lot, I bet for one brief second she smiled and thought, “True.” It made her reconsider hating life…at least I hope so.

We have become a pretty secluded society, hiding behind our social networks. We suddenly don’t need to be overly involved. We can stand at arms length and turn a blind eye to other people’s pain. The internet has created a generation of careless, heartless, ego maniacs. If that’s the way of the world, then I think we need to reach out and lend a virtual helping hand.

NOTE TO SELF: Instead of focusing on your own manic Monday, pay special attention to your social network of virtual friends who are aching and full of trouble. Today I challenge you to be watchful and helpful. Reach out.
