Scripture to reflect upon for Manic Monday: 1 John 2:2
He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not only our sins,
but also for those of the whole world.
Regardless of whether or not you follow or believe in Christ…He bought you! Jesus paid your price, paid your debt, paid in full!!
We see the word “free” everywhere we go, and it usually comes with a hidden agenda. You have to “buy one” first, or spend a certain amount of money, or come in on a particular day, or subscribe to a mailing list. In our world, the saying is true: “Nothing is free in life.” But outside of this realm there is something completely free. It has NO strings attached, you don’t need to do anything to earn it or receive it. It’s just sitting there, waiting for you to take it. It’s as if someone else “bought” it for you, and now it’s just sitting there waiting to be claimed.
If someone bought you a new fully furnished home, a new car with new car smell, new designer clothes, new fancy shoes, and supplied your every waking need such as groceries, expenses, and entertainment, PLUS paid your past debts in full so you never had anything to worry about, what would you do?
Would you say: “Thanks but no thanks, that’s not for me. I don’t want that kind of happiness. I’d rather struggle along everyday and barely get by. I like it right where I am. I don’t want to be free from all that holds me back. I’ll stay right here.”?
Or would you reluctantly receive the gift and then try to repay it back? “Thanks, but what’s the catch!?” The answer is: None. It’s all yours, free and clear. “No,” you respond, “that can’t be. What do I need to do to repay you back?” Answer: Nothing. It’s a gift for you because I love you. And again, you say, “No one loves me that much!” And although you take the gift--because, duh, you want it--you then spend most of your days in your new house, new car, and wearing your new clothes trying to devise a plan to repay this amazing gift. It can’t be done!
The gift of salvation is no different. It’s a whole new life!! All new. Nothing remains the same. And it was already purchased for you by Christ on the cross. This free gift that requires NOTHING of us should be received humbly, graciously and joyfully. The gift was bought and paid for in full. The Message translation of today’s scripture reads, “When He served as a sacrifice for our sins, He solved the sin problem for good—not only ours, but the whole world’s.” That means it’s done. It’s finished. There’s no questions to be asked. The problem has been solved. YOUR problems have been solved.
If someone today had all the answers to literally solve all of your problems, would you not at least listen? Would you not want to hear what they had to say to help you? And if they told you that the answer came in a package that was already bought and paid for specifically for you by the kindness, generosity and love of one person, wouldn’t that sweeten the deal?
NOTE TO SELF: Tell the world today that they have a free gift waiting for them. It’s been bought and paid for in full. They need not do anything but receive.
Today I challenge you to share this Good News with one person! Give this gift to a friend or family member who you have been praying for. The gift of salvation doesn’t need shiny paper or fancy ribbons…but it does! It also comes with trumpets blaring and angels singing.
Father in Heaven, I pray that anyone reading this today who does not know You will realize deep in their heart that they are immensely loved by You, so much so, that You paid their debts in full. Open their hearts to reach out to Jesus today by repenting their sins and TAKING the gift He purchased for them. Soften their hearts, mellow their spirits, and renew their minds. Create in them a new heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within them. Change them. Transform them. Cleanse them and make them righteous! Nothing they do can stop You from loving them!!
