Emergency Plan

Scripture to reflect upon: Genesis 6:21
“You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

Last night I experienced one of the most terrifying storms of my life. The wind was whipping at nearly 100 mph and my greatest fear was that my husband was out on the lake in the middle of it all.

When I was finally able to get in touch with Jared, he relayed that he was fine—Praise God! But the wind storm took down many power lines and our electricity was out all night. While we were on the phone, Jared tried to tell me where a flashlight was but I couldn't find it. I was down to two candles and a few spare tea lights. I wasn’t prepared for this kind of emergency at all.

When the great flood took place, God prepared Noah wisely. Although Noah didn’t know the exact particulars about what would take place, he listened to God and put together an emergency plan.

God said, “Take this, take that, leave this, leave that. Build it like this, make rooms here, coat it with this…” God gave detailed directions (Genesis 4:13-22). It wasn’t just, “Hey, Noah. Build an ark and take some animals with you. A flood’s coming.” No. God prepared his path. He set the course ahead of Noah.

God has an emergency plan for your life; for those tricky moments that catch you off guard and leave you feeling as if God abandoned you. But He doesn’t. He sets up a path ahead of time. He tells you what to do, how to do it, and He won’t leave out any important details. He’s usually telling us when everything seems hunky dory and, unlike Noah, we begin too scratch our head asking, “Why would I do that!?” Verse 22 says, “Noah did everything just as God commanded.” Just as… And again in 7:5, “Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.”

It’s been said before, I’m sure, what others must have been thinking about Noah constructing this enormous boat in the middle of the desert. He must have been ridiculed and called foolish. But when the destruction took place, Noah was prepared, because God gave him an emergency plan. Who else had an emergency plan for the flood?

Are you getting prepared for those unexpected “disasters” in your life (think outside of natural disasters)? Arm yourself with God’s Word and protection. God already warned us that we would experience trouble. That alone gives us comfort in knowing that He is watching out for us, standing at the doorway directing our safe exit out of the fire.

NOTE TO SELF: God has an emergency plan for you. Take time to familarize yourself with the appropriate steps to safety.
