Scripture to reflect upon: Romans 6:14
For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace.

I was so excited the other day to see so many great Christian CDs at the library. I checked out ten, got home and began to burn them to my iTunes. As the first one was loading onto my playlist, I started imagining how I would have a whole new collection of songs to sing during my praise and worship time with God in the mornings. I actually got a little giddy.

As I loaded the third CD into my cd rom, I began to look over the leaflet from the Lakewood Live CD. I knew it was Joel Osteen’s church choir, so I got really excited about having this as part of my collection…until I read, “You know better…” Right there on the insert. “You know you shouldn’t…”

I began to make a lot of excuses as to why it was okay for me to illegally burn copies of these CDs to my library: I’m broke. I gave up all my music when I moved to Chicago and now I have to rebuild my collection from scratch. Then God asked me, “What if someone did that to Jared’s music? Just stole it and you didn’t receive the money he deserved from it?” At first I sighed deeply in understanding, but then I began to make justifications again. “Well God, it would be a compliment to him…”

I burned another CD and as it loaded to my computer I sat here trying to wrestle with God over this issue. For an hour I tried to talk God into letting me do something wrong. I tried to recall Rahab and how she lied to save Joshua and God blessed her. I even thought of David’s affair with Bathsheba. “You forgave them, God…”

The law makes us sometimes want to disobey! Reread that scripture. We are not ruled by sin anymore because we are not under the law. See, the law is strict and incredibly hard to abide to; but grace will help us make the right decisions about the law and will impart in us a desire to do what’s right.

I deleted nearly every CD I burned from the library from my iTunes. I kept dc Talk, intermission, and made a promise to God that I would only keep it until I had the money to purchase the CD myself. I promised myself that I would listen to the music while I had it on loan and make a decision on songs I really like and will eventually purchase for my own personal worship library.

Doing the right thing isn’t always easy. But God says, “If you fully obey me and carefully follow my commands, I will set you high above all the nations on earth. You will be blessed. The fruit of your womb (my children) will be blessed. I will grant you abundant prosperity. I will open the heavens and bless everything you do. I will make you the head, not the tail.” (Deuteronomy 28:1-13, paraphrased)

NOTE TO SELF: I am not a slave to sin or the law, but I live under the grace and power of Jesus who sets me free.
