Sighs Matter

Scripture to reflect upon: Romans 8:26-27 (The Message)
Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting, God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along. If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter. He does our praying in and for us, making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. (NIV: but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.)

There are so many moments in my prayer life when I feel either completely overwhelmed by just how much I need to pray for, or the lack of thought process to conjure any prayers up at all! There are many times I find myself sighing, mainly out of frustration of my own ineptitude to simply pray. What a relief to know that when I sigh, the Holy Spirit finds words for it and turns it into a prayer.

I find so much comfort in knowing that even my sighs matter. My groans, too, can find the ears of God with sweet, soothing sounds.

Sometimes I feel the Spirit move me to pray for something in particular. Other times I feel nothing at all, and all I can do at that point is sigh and admit, “I don’t know their needs, God…but You do. Let Your will be done.”

I had a very dear friend of mine recently pray for me but gave her no details. I wasn’t quite willing to tell them at that time. I just needed prayer and knew God would hear her sighs and groans and turn it into music.

She had been praying for me for a couple of days and suddenly God woke her up at 4 AM and gave her a vision. She didn’t quite know what the vision meant, but she wrote me on facebook and described it to me. I didn’t know what it meant either, so I tried to figure out the symbolism of her vision and what it meant. What I came up with was then confirmed—almost word for word—in my daily devotional.

I’m happy to say that her prayer helped me immensely. And because I sighed and waited patiently for God to show me what He needed to show me, I have found rest and peace with my situation. In fact, God completely restored me and I never have to look back.

NOTE TO SELF: Pray. Sigh. Groan. That’s all you have to do. God will do the rest. Because even  sighs matter.
